Why Become an Action Learning Facilitator?

"Westbury Homes really valued the "projects" (ALQs) people were working on, and for me the experience was hugely developmental, and beneficial, as the Action Learning provided real and timely business benefits. One example, was a Build Director, who after implementing learning around influencing others, was able to save the organisation in the region of £1m. As a learning and development expert, I am proud of having implemented a learning programme in an organisation that has made so many tangible bottom line benefits." Ashley Hawkins, Learning & Development Manager, Westbury Homes, ALFA Graduate

The Action Learning Question (ALQ) methodology has been recognised by major corporations and business schools. We believe that to make work-based action learning work you have to work with a ‘system’ and this needs to be straightforward, logical, flexible but rigorous.

Action Learning Questions (ALQs)
Individual business or personal development related questions, involving action based research are written up and presented for credit towards professional qualification. The ALQ approach enables organisations and its members to choose their own questions, to improve performance and learn at the same time.

Through the work-based ALFA process you will gain an understanding of the how to make action learning work in your organisation and with your clients. Additionally you will develop your capability as a facilitator of action learning at two key levels:

Understanding how to integrate work-based action learning with existing business or organisational systems, recognising the importance of managing the processes in line with the organisational culture

Facilitating action learning projects with groups and individuals in your organisation and with your clients.

As an Action Learning Facilitator, a key challenge is to help participants to:
  • Understand the relevant questions – including defining the right business/organisation or career related questions.
  • Bring work-based questions/issues/problems to training events, courses and workshops.
  • Plan effective action by regularly asking ‘So what are you going to do about it?’
  • Learn with and from others by asking, ‘Who can help you with this question/problem/issue?'
  • Identify and consult with key stakeholders who have an interest in the question/problem/issue being addressed successfully
Other key aspects of the Action Learning approach is that the work-based questions / issues should be problems rather than puzzles:
  • Problems are not clearly defined
  • There is no right answers
  • Boundaries are unclear
  • There are no clear steps for resolving them.
Action Learning is a social process – it is about learning with and from each other, both for members of a learning set but also for you as facilitator.
As part of the ALFA programme you will join with other participants, learning and sharing with your community of practice... and you can remain connected to the ever growing community of action learning facilitators through the Linkedin Action Learning Forum
